Welcome To Itoh Peony Tasmania
CARING FOR THE POTTED ITOH PEONY YOU HAVE JUST PURCHASED
Itoh peonies will grow successfully in a pot with just a few points to remember!
Potting on/transplanting
The pot your peony is in now is big enough for it to flower in Spring however next Autumn potting it into a larger pot or moving into the ground is recommended for the best results. Ideally re-pot into a larger planter or pot greater than 50cm in diameter, as this would be sufficient for the Itoh to live in for a number of years. A smaller pot can be used but may not give the best results and the peony will need re-potting again the following year or the next.
- The potting mix when re-potting should be very light and airy, a course potting mix with perlite would be ideal. Peony roots like room to move and don’t like sitting wet for too long.

Nutrition
The pot you have purchased has everything it needs to carry it through to Autumn. When re-potting or planting into the ground, add a small handful of slow release compound fertiliser that would be suitable for root vegetables for example potatoes. Compost and/or a natural fertiliser such as sheep manure etc would be quite adequate, either as a substitute or in addition but a reduced amount of the compound fertiliser would be recommended if combining the two.
- Ensure Ph is only slightly acidic or neutral 6.5-7. Testing the Ph is relatively simple with a home kit from your local nursery. Most soils/mixes are acidic so the addition of Aglime or Dolomite will raise the Ph to the desired level.
Watering
When watering keep the soil damp but not wet, a good soak every few days may be easier than a small amount every day if the weather is hot and dry. Spring demand will be high and regular watering over the summer period to avoid the pot drying out is necessary. As the plant goes into a more dormant phase over Autumn and Winter the water demand will be low.
Positioning
ideally afternoon shade will benefit the overall performance of your new addition to the family. However any position that gives around 30% shade during the day will give good results.

Autumn
Die-back of the leaves is normal for peonies in Autumn. When you see the foliage change from green to more autumn colours of red and orange as they start top die, it is time to cut back the foliage and clean the plant up for winter. The removal of dying foliage helps prevent disease carry over to next Spring. Ideally dispose of your prunings’ into a fire or the rubbish. A proven compost system could also be an option for the waste.
Remember!
Enjoy the flowers and even cut some to take inside. Itohs set themselves apart from their herbaceous cousins, with a broader range of colour, longer flowering times on the plant and having a high resistance to disease. The bushy foliage will stay nice and green right through summer making this the ideal peony to grow in the garden!
